Pauma Band of Mission Indians selects Hard Rock for casino venture
Peter Morton's Hard Rock Hotel & Casino announced that it has been selected by the Pauma Band of Mission Indians to be the developer and operator of a new $300 million hotel and casino in northern San Diego County.
"We're very excited about the project and we look forward to working with the Pauma tribe and I feel really good about it," said Peter Morton, chairman and founder of Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, told Casino Journal.
In a statement released through Morton's company, tribal Chairman Chris Devers said, "the tribe voted overwhelmingly for the Hard Rock and is ecstatic with its new relationship."
"It is envisioned that the hotel and casino will have 300 hotel rooms, 100 gaming tables, 2,000 slot machines, a concert venue, restaurants, and spa," added Hard Rock President Kevin Kelley.
The Hard Rock proposal was chosen for the Pauma gaming venture project from among several competing bidders, including Foxwoods Resort Casino.
"We plan to open by the fourth quarter of 2006," said Morton.
Morton described the Pauma Band as "a great bunch of guys and we're looking forward to working with them and we're all very excited about the project."
He was particularly concerned that the project not be overly damaging to the environment, he added.
"My hopes are that it does the sort of business that we hope and anticipate it will," he said. "We hope that it will provide a lot of jobs in the community. We want it to be as environmentally friendly a resort as possible. I'm on the board of trustees for the National Resource Defense Council and it's my social and moral responsibility to ensure that this is one hell of a responsible hotel in terms of the environment."
Morton, who maintains the right to the Hard Rock name west of the Mississippi, is not involved with the Hard Rock properties in Florida that are owned and operated by the Seminole tribe.
Asked how he would deal with the increasingly competitive California marketplace, Morton simply said, "By creating a great product."
