REPORT: Participation slots disappearing from Harrah’s

The Las Vegas Review-Journal is reporting that participation
slot machines, or games that the casino operator shares winnings with the
manufacturer, are being replaced with nonparticipation models at Harrah’s
properties in Las Vegas and Atlantic City.
The R-J story points to dozens of participation slot
machines no longer at Bally's in Las Vegas.
The games are reported to be all IGT-owned devices including some of the
Reno-based manufacturer’s popular titles such as Wheel of Fortune. Harrah's
filled the empty spaces with nonparticipation slot machines as the company
attempts to reduce gaming revenues going to slot makers during tough economic
times.
Harrah's spokesman Gary Thompson confirmed the
participation games had disappeared. Part of the reason was to reduce expenses.
He didn't say how many slots had been switched, according to the R-J report.
