Opposition surfaces to Ohio racino plan
July 21, 2009
A conservative organization is challenging Ohio’s plan to put slot machines at racetracks.
In a filing Monday, LetOhioVote.org asked the Ohio Supreme Court to give voters the opportunity to approve the plan. LetOhioVote.Org has started gathering signatures to place the slots measure on the ballot in November 2010.
The committee, whose members include former Republican state Rep. Tom Brinkman, said the actions of the governor and Legislature ignored the will of the people.
On July 13, Gov. Ted Strickland issued an executive order to expand the Ohio Lottery to include slot machines at Ohio’s seven horse racing tracks. The Legislature clarified the governor’s authority to do so in the budget plan Strickland signed on Friday.
