Margaritaville gets green light in Bossier City
November 21, 2011
Bossier parish voters gave their approval to a Margaritaville-themed resort in a special election on Saturday. The referendum, which was decided by a 61 percent to 39 percent margin and still needs to be verified, will give the Shreveport/Bossier City market six riverboat casinos and one racino.
The $195 million project will offer 1,275 slot machines, 38 tables, 400 hotel rooms in an 18-story tower and employ 1,200 people. The vote turned largely on the question of jobs, but the project was green-lighted for consideration by Bossier parish with the hope that it will help bring new visitors from the Dallas market to Shreveport/Bossier City. The market has been hit hard by Oklahoma tribal casinos, and Jimmy Buffet, the name behind the Margaritaville brand, is said to be very popular in northeast Texas.
"We're ecstatic and so pleased that the citizens of Bossier had the confidence in us to do this," said Deborah Harkins, a spokeswoman for the casino project.
The referendum verification process takes up to 10 days. Construction on Margaritaville Bossier City is set to begin in January with a target completion date of May 2013.
