Objections to union election are discounted by judge; tribe to appeal decisionA judge has overruled the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe’s objections to the election of a union by Foxwoods Resorts casino dealers and has recommended that the election be certified.
The tribe has vowed to appeal the decision, which could eventually lead both parties into federal court.
In a written decision, Judge Raymond Green discounted each of the 10 objections the tribe’s attorneys raised in the wake of the Nov. 24 election. Table-game and poker dealers voted 1,289 to 852 in favor of representation by the United Auto Workers union.
Dealers at Foxwoods and UAW representatives warmly received Green’s decision Friday morning.
The tribe had questioned why the ballots were not printed in multiple languages and why an election notice in Chinese was printed only in one dialect. The tribe also challenged the conduct of UAW representatives, alleging that they harassed and intimidated eligible voters before the election.
