Like any profession, it is easy for slot managers to get lost in the day-to-day minutiae of the job—dealing with staff, chatting with players, meeting with vendors, answering to upper management, reviewing reports… a list of truly endless, but vital, business tasks.

But every now and then it is good to remove the nose from the grindstone and evaluate what is going on outside the department… and how emerging products, trends and technologies both within and without gaming could impact the slot machine sector.

Fortunately, there is a perfect opportunity every year for the harried slot manager to step outside the building and hear and evaluate the latest gaming change factors—the educational tracks at Global Gaming Expo (G2E). With this in mind, let me slip into some temporary slot management shoes and pick a few sessions to attend at G2E, along with reasons why I would be there if I were involved with slot operations.

SCOTUS decision—what the ruling actually said and what it meant

Earlier this year, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling on Murphy v. NCAA, one of the most consequential cases for gaming in the U.S in a generation. Learn more about the complexities of the court's decision and what it means for the gaming industry, the sports industry and beyond.

Reason for attending: The legalization of sports wagering is perhaps the biggest news of the gaming year thus far. To take maximum advantage of the opportunity, understanding all permutations—both good and bad—of the decision is vital for all aspects of the casino enterprise.

Cryptocurrency: Its potential gaming benefits and regulatory challenges

Since Bitcoin became the first decentralized mainstream cryptocurrency in 2009, it has slowly become an acceptable method of gambling payment for some gaming products including eSports and online gaming… This panel will first explore what cryptocurrency and blockchains are and how they are currently used in gaming, and then will consider the benefits and challenges they pose for operators and regulators.

Reason to attend: Sure, I understand that you are likely already sick of hearing about cryptocurrency and blockchain and wonder how these technologies even apply to land-based slot floors, but isn’t this the same way you originally felt about mobile products and maybe even Internet gaming? Best to know something about the latest disruptive technology facing the gaming industry.

Gaming regulatory and operator issues in the wake of #MeToo

The #MeToo movement has cast a bright light on the extent and impact of harassment in the workplace. In the wake of shocking headlines and social media accounts of activities in entertainment, gaming, sports and other industries, companies are examining how similar situations are currently either prevented or identified and resolved. Part of the evaluation will focus on identifying and implementing best practices that both enhance the workplace environment and protect the integrity of the industry…

Reason to attend: The #MeToo movement shows no signs of abating. It is important that management-level executives have programs in place to identify and immediately alleviate any sexual harassment issues.

This is only a small sampling of the sessions offered at G2E. If you are attending the event, you owe it to yourself to visit and peruse the educational tracks… I am sure you will find something that piques your interest.
