No longer conducted in smoky backrooms by colorful and shady characters straight from a Damon Runyon novel, sports betting is a multi-billion-dollar global gaming enterprise legitimately conducted by some of the world’s most respected sports wagering and gaming companies.
The U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling to overturn a federal ban on sports betting meant that each state can self-determine legislation permitting sports betting. With only eight states currently permitting sports betting, you could be forgiven for assuming that some of the wind has been taken out of the industry’s sails.
It has been said that sports betting is a low-hold business and that it’s easy to oversell its revenue potential. Both of those statements are true, but there’s also a strong argument that legal and regulated sports betting is the most dramatic development to hit the American gaming industry in decades.
